Starting an exercise program is hard enough. But sticking with it can be even harder.
Here are six science-backed ways to keep your routine from getting derailed.

1. Choose the right activities. If your workout is unpleasant, you’re not going to stay with it. There are lots of different ways to move your body, from walking to water aerobics. So find ones you like or at least don’t mind.

2. Seek instant gratification. Instead of focusing on how exercise might help you live longer or head off a heart attack someday, look to its immediate benefits, like less stress or better sleep, to motivate you.

3. Schedule it. Put working out on your calendar just as you would a meeting or doctor’s appointment. That way, it will be a priority instead of something you just squeeze in when you have time.

4. Entertain yourself. Listen to music or podcasts. Or if you can do so safely, watch a favorite TV series. Distractions like these can reduce boredom and make your workout more enjoyable.

5. Be sociable. Teaming up with a with a friend can also make exercise more fun. The same goes for fitness classes. In addition, exercising with others can provide extra motivation to show up because someone’s expecting you.

6. Reward yourself. When you reach a goal, treat yourself to something you enjoy like a massage, concert, or vacation. But not food. If you’re watching your weight, eating that carton of ice cream can counteract all your hard work.
