How Diet Affects Arthritis

Foods that ease arthritis pain.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Could the foods you eat relieve your arthritis?

The answer is yes and no.

There isn’t any official arthritis diet that will make your pain go away, but some foods may combat the inflammation that makes joints swollen and sore.

Like salmon, mackerel and albacore tuna. They’re high in omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce substances in the body that promote inflammation.

If you’re not a fan of seafood, grab a handful of almonds or walnuts, which are also packed with anti-inflammatory fats.

Or, drizzle some olive oil over your salad. Studies find it too may reduce inflammation.

Oatmeal, brown rice and other whole grains are also arthritis-friendly foods. People who eat lots of these have lower levels of inflammatory markers in their blood.

Fruits and vegetables are full of antioxidants, which may protect your body against inflammation.

The darker the produce, the more potent an inflammation fighter it is. So, fill your plate with color – broccoli, cherries, beets, and berries are all good options.

You’ll also find antioxidants in drinks such as green tea and red wine, as well as in spices like cinnamon, turmeric, and ginger.
