If you’re spending time in the sun, think outside the bottle, beyond sunscreen.

The right clothing can help protect your skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays. Choose tightly-woven fabrics and dark colors. Wear long sleeves and pants whenever possible.

Special sun-blocking clothes, which come in many different styles, are a good option. They typically cost about 20% more than ordinary duds.

You can also find a laundry product that wash sun protection right into your own clothes. The cost is about $6 per load, and the effects last through 20 washes.

Don’t forget to top yourself off with a hat. Just be sure the brim is wide and goes all around your head.

If you must wear a ball cap, add a bandana to protect your ears and neck, common sites for skin cancer.

Remember: smart clothing choices are important all year round, not just in summer. Protecting yourself from the sun is something that’s always in style.
