If you have arthritis, managing pain can be a daily challenge. Medications can help, but not all effective therapies come in a bottle.

For example, heat can provide relief by increasing circulation and reducing muscle spasms.

While wrapping joints in cold compresses can reduce swelling and also numb deep pain.

Research shows massage can be effective as well.

So can regular exercise, which strengthens the muscles around joints and improves flexibility.

An especially good exercise for arthritis is tai chi, the ancient Chinese martial art combines slow, gentle movements with meditation.

It’s been shown to help reduce pain and stiffness, improve balance, and increase muscle strength.

Acupuncture, another ancient Chinese practice, may also help reduce arthritis pain, according to studies.

Scientists aren’t sure why, but they think it may increase the release of chemicals that block pain.

These methods don’t all work for everyone, and they won’t make your arthritis disappear, but they can make living with it a bit easier.
