Soaking in a warm tub or standing under a soothing shower spray can bring relief if you have arthritis, but slippery surfaces in the bathroom can be dangerous and joint pain and stiffness can make bathing a challenge. Here are a few steps to make it safer and easier.
For starters, put a rubber mat inside the bathtub or shower and one next to it so you don’t slip on the wet floor. Have grab bars mounted on the sides of the tub or shower, and on the wall next to it. The rails need to be strong enough to support your weight. That’s not the case with towel racks, soap dishes, or other fixtures, so don’t rely on them for support.
A walk-in tub or a shower without a step reduces the risk of tripping by allowing you to go straight in rather than over a barrier. The same goes for a transfer bench, which lets you slide easily in and out of the shower or tub.
A seat inside the shower is also a good idea if you’re not steady on your feet or have trouble standing. It can be built in or purchased. If you buy one, make sure it has rubber feet or suction cups so it doesn’t slide.
Before getting in, put everything you need in a caddy, within easy reach. Keep your soap and shampoo in dispensers, so you won’t have to squeeze bottles or reach down to pick up a slippery bar of soap.
Another option: soap on a rope. the rope goes around your wrist to keep you from dropping the bar.
A hand-held shower head can make it easier to wash hard-to-reach places. Ditto for a long-handled sponge, which helps you avoid bending and stretching, and a wash mit can be a good alternative to a washcloth if you find it painful to hold onto one.
While soaking in the tub, use a bath pillow to prevent pain in your neck and back.
When you’re done, slip on a terrycloth robe or bath cape instead of toweling off. The fabric will absorb the water on your skin.
By using these simple tools and tricks, you can wash away some of the pain and peril of keeping your body clean.
