If you’ve read the information that comes with prescription drugs, you know that exposure to light, humidity, or extreme temperatures can reduce their effectiveness.

This can pose a special challenge if you’re on medications such as those for diabetes which you need to take with you when you leave home.

But remembering a few tips can help ensure that your drugs work when you need them.

Carry your medication in an insulated pack. Medical supply companies make specialized containers, but a soft-sided insulated lunch box or thermos will also work.

When traveling by car, don’t put medicines in your trunk. Keep them up front where you have climate control.

If you leave your car for an extended period, take your medication with you. In the winter, car temperatures may fall below freezing. In the summer, they can soar above 100 degrees.

When traveling by plane, pack meds in your carry-on bag. Checked baggage may be exposed to extreme heat or cold. Plus, unexpected travel delays can separate you from checked medications when you may need them.

Medicine isn’t the only thing that requires special handling. Blood sugar test strips and monitors are also sensitive to temperature and moisture. Strips and monitors exposed to the heat or cold may not be accurate.

By taking proper care of your drugs and testing supplies, they’ll be more likely to take care of you.
