How to Get Your Whole Family Involved In Caring for Your Diabetes

Managing diabetes is a family affair. Learn how to ask for help when you need it from your parents, partner, and children.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Support from family and friends can help make managing a chronic condition easier. And it can be especially important when it comes to diabetes.

If you have the condition, educate yourself about it, and make sure those closest to you are knowledgeable as well.

For example, family and close friends should learn to recognize the signs of high and low blood sugar levels.

And they should know how to respond if necessary—whether it’s offering a glass of juice or calling the doctor.

Family members can also help by getting healthy with you.  Take walks or go biking together, and encourage the entire family to join you in eating a healthy diet.  It will benefit them as well.

Make sure those around you know that managing diabetes can sometimes be frustrating and stressful.  They should be understanding and supportive … without nagging.  And you should be willing to ask them for help when you need it.

By making diabetes care a group effort, you’ll not only get better control over your condition—you may also bring those you care about …closer together.
